Take in the summer air!

by Amber from Vermont

Summertime is finally here, which means the family is working long hours and our daughter and I are staying home more by ourselves.

During the summer we make it a daily goal as a family to get outside as much as we can, even if it is just for 10 minutes. We love this time of year because we get to spend most of the summer outside.

We have gone on a couple different adventures so far this summer. We have gone to the race track, we have gone on walks just about every day that it hasn't rained. On our walks, we stop at the pond that's on our road and we look at the pretty view and skip rocks.

The summer season motivates us to get outside even more than we do in the winter, because the temperatures are warmer and allow us to be out there for a majority of the day. It can be from the time we get up until lunch time, and then back outside. We love to sit in the grass and let our daughter explore the different textures of the grass and feel rocks and sticks. Our daughter’s favorite thing this summer has been to play in her kiddie pool.

We encourage the importance of getting as much fresh air as we can during this time of year. We all sleep with our bedroom windows open, and on car rides instead of using the air conditioner we roll the windows down.

On the long hot summer days we love to try different recipes with the produce that is available to us. A few family favorites are fruit salads, and then for veggies we love to offer a variety of new veggies to our daughter. On top of eating the veggies cut up as they are, we enjoy what we like to call our family’s fried veggies. The fried veggies we usually make are summer squash, zucchini, peppers, onions, carrots, with some butter, salt and pepper. Then on the grill, we love potatoes and onions wrapped in tin foil. We always love to try new recipes with the produce the summer season offers us.
