Farmers Market Fun!

by Megan from North Carolina

Winston Salem’s Cobblestone Farmers Market is a veritable feast—for both the eyes and the stomach.

When you see the swirl of smiling, chattering people holding cups of coffee and paper bags of fresh produce, you know you’re in the right place. Tents line the perimeter of the market, where farmers and artisans sit proudly behind tables boasting the season’s bounty.

In the summer there are tomatoes as red as rubies, bright green bundles of fresh herbs, and mountains of vibrant berries.

A quick stroll through the friendly, bustling market will also reveal jars of sticky sweet honey, bouquets of rainbow colored flowers, and chocolate chip cookies warmed by the sun. In short, there is something there for everyone.

Using WIC Benefits? . . .So easy!

At the farmers market, using your WIC benefits could not be easier. When you first arrive, find the Information Booth. Let them know how much of your monthly fruits and vegetables allotment you would like to spend. They will swipe your WIC card and give you the requested amount in $1 wooden tokens, which you can use at any stand that accepts SNAP/EBT. (Note: I recommend checking your remaining benefits before arriving at the market.)

More Than Just Fresh Produce!

I took my two toddlers to the farmers market one Wednesday afternoon and was pleased to find a fun, free kids’ activity. It began with a scavenger hunt for ingredients such as tomatoes, garlic, basil, and onions.

Once we found the items, we presented them to volunteers who helped us slice and dice each ingredient and transform them into a delicious, fresh salsa. Another volunteer made homemade chips using corn tortillas, lime juice, and a pinch of salt. My boys had a blast helping make the salsa, and I was surprised to see them gobble it up by the spoonful.

The Cobblestone Farmers Market is a great way to introduce your children to new flavors and experiences, all while using your WIC benefits and showing your family that healthy eating can be fun. The market is open on Wednesdays from 4-6PM until 8/10/22 and on Saturdays from 8:30AM-12PM. You can find out more information on their website or Instagram (@cobblestonefarmersmarket).
